Nils Kreuter has joined the Sequeira lab as a PhD student at the Australian National University (ANU) to work on acoustic tracking data from marine megafauna around Australia. His work will examine fine scale movement properties to investigate social, collective, or coordinated behaviour with a specific focus on potentially existing social networks. He aims to utilize this knowledge to improve conservation efforts and to bolster the efficiency of marine protected areas. For his PhD Nils will collaborate with researchers from the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS), Macquarie University, University of the Balearic Islands and the Marine Biological Association in the UK.
Nils received his BSc in Biology from Kiel University in Germany and then worked as a research assistant for the GEOMAR. For his MSc in Marine Biology, he focused on conservation and applied ecology which enabled him to spend one semester each in Portugal, Italy, France and Germany as part of the IMBRSea program. For his thesis he focused on elasmobranch cognition and after graduating he worked in the science-policy interface for marine conservation and as a research engineer for Uppsala University. Nils has a passion for the ocean and loves to spend as much time outdoors as he can.
A big welcome to Nils and best of luck with his studies!
